A major perk of my job is trying out the city’s best hair stylists and colorists. I was first introduced to Nelson Chan of Nelson J Salon when I first moved to LA, about five years ago, and he’s been my go-to guy ever since. This year, however, I was invited to meet other local colorists (part of the job!) and regrettably let some of them try their hand at my hair, and let’s just say it’s been a rough few months.
From going way too dark to too red to too blonde to too boring brown and everything in between, my poor hair has gone through a LOT more than it’s used to!
And let’s be honest–Asian hair is tricky! You don’t want it to look too cheesy, too streaky, too ordinary or too unnatural. It’s a fine line, ladies.
Paranoid about damaging my locks, I usually don’t color my hair more than three times a year (a perk of having dark, multi-dimensional hair that embraces the ombre trend); but this year, I’ve probably colored it six times already just trying to get it back to where it should be! Eek.
Which brings me to my point here–Nelson gets it right EVERY time, and I’ve learned my lesson about color experimentation. Long story short, I will continue to trust him with my color until the end of time. (And honestly, you should too.)
Whenever I sit in his chair, I let him do whatever he wants (he’s truly a color god!) and give zero direction. But guess what? Every time, he knows exactly what to do, and it’s always a tad different, in a wonderful, stress-free, exciting way.
This time, he made sure my hair was rich and glossy near my face and lightened the ends in larger sections to create tons of interesting dimension. After nine months of color crises, it feels so good to be back on track! Thank you Nelson for working your magic on me.
