If there was a competition for fighting crowds while shopping collaboration sales under a time limit and nabbing the best goods available, I would so win.
The way I see it, it’s a sport (a hysterical, fuel-driven fashion fight, if you will)–and I have yet to lose. I’ve come out victorious with a number of designer lines in the past (Lanvin for H&M, Roberto Cavalli for H&M, Versace for H&M, Jason Wu for Target, the list goes on), and in some odd, twisted way the mere challenge fully and completely invigorates me, challenges me to new physical and emotional levels and brings purpose to what I do for living.
So when I was invited to pre-shop the Marni for H&M collection in advance at a private event last night (before it went public this morning at 8AM), I was relieved in one way; and yet overwhelmed by anxiety in another. Battling the general public is one thing, fighting the fashion fight with industry insiders (friends, frenemies, career role models, former colleagues and the like) is quite another.
To make the story short, let’s just say I turned some heads with my prowess and fierce shopping skills, quick hands, darting eyes and limber moves. I snapped up pretty much everything desirable in the collection in mere minutes (and trust me, it was a MAD HOUSE), and waited in line for over an hour as others gazed at my stash in disbelief (or was that jealousy?) *shrug.*
My tactic for these shopping occasions is to prepare in advance (I got the leg up by attending the debut party a few weeks ago), dress comfortably (for me that meant black ankle pants, 2.5″ heeled booties, a button-down blouse, a sizeable Chanel handbag, hair pulled back), always overbuy, distribute later (I have sisters and girlfriends galore), don’t you dare waste time trying on in store, and be mindful of return policies (in this case, H&M wised up and is only allowing 10 days for returns.) Um okay.
Here’s the loot:
Who else scored some Marni for H&M today??
